On October 6th Mark Sauer, principal for MSC presented the San Diego Mission Education Building to a delegation from Nepal. The delegation consisted of Nepalese government officials and engineers studying modern applications of engineering and construction systems to provide public safety. MSC presented how seismic hazard reduction can co-exist with historic preservation. The SD Mission Education Bldg. is an excellent example of engineering design, construction technique and historic preservation. Since both California and Nepal are highly seismically active it was stressed to the delegation that publicly occupied buildings can be retrofitted with sympathy to the historic fabric.
The lively hour and a half of discussion and close up view of the structural assemblies provided eyes on samples of what can be done. Much thanks goes out to Ananta Baidya PE who organized the event. Ananta is a former engineer for the City of San Diego and currently a consulting engineer. Ananta is the chair of the Nepal Liaison Committee for American Society of Nepalese Engineers USA. As always great thanks to Pat Schmitzer, office manager for the San Diego Mission de Alcala for making the building available.
Photos of the event are forthcoming

This was a great opportunity because this is a current project so attendees were able to see the various phases of work to restore a historic adobe. The next stops were at Sikes Adobe Farmhouse and lastly the Warner –Carrillo Adobe. ... See MoreSee Less

In 1794, the Mission San Juan Capistrano built a number of adobes to house soldiers and the local Native Americans who worked at the mission.
Don Blas Aguilar purchased two of these adobes in 1845, which he named "La Hacienda Aguilar." The south wing adobe was called Casa Tejada; it unfortunately is no longer standing. The north wing adobe was called Casa de Esperanza, or "House of Hope." It still stands.
Today MSC is executing the seismic retrofit and adobe restoration of this historic adobe. This adobe is located on the historic El Camino Real HWY. The project will be completed by the end of July 2015
